MARYVILLE — An electrical problem was the likely cause of an early-morning fire that heavily damaged a nearly 100-year-old office building in downtown Maryville today, officials said.
The fire, reported shortly after 5 a.m. at the Law Office Building, 306 S. Washington St., appears to have started in an second-floor closet where computers are housed, according Maryville Police and Fire Chief Tony Crisp.
No injuries were reported, although the blaze has displaced the 30,000-square-foot building’s 15 commercial tenants.
Crews with the Maryville and Alcoa Fire departments worked for some four hours to extinguish the flames, which buckled or collapsed sections of the roof.
The incident closed the surrounding block at S. Washington Street and Sevierville Road until about noon.
The fire officially remains under investigation.
